With hourly expirations, barrier options differ from traditional above/below binary options in that investors make trades based on whether the price of a certain asset will trade above or below a specific level at expiration.

Taking a quick look at gold barrier options pricing on StartOptions right now, shows an upper call price of 1276.8 and a lower put price of 1270.80 with gold futures trading at 1273.80 with 46 minutes left in the expiry cycle. Thus if you expected gold futures to move around 0.25% either higher or lower by expiration you could purchase the appropriate barrier call or put option and potentially triple your money!
